Who is Ash Gordon?

People who aren’t familiar with me are often surprised to hear that I started my career as a lawyer. I worked as in-house legal counsel for a not-for-profit organisation, a data centre and an insurance company over the period of 7 years. However, it probably hasn’t been that much of a surprise to those who know me that I am now a graphic designer. I have always dabbled in arts and crafts. As a child, I remember when my Mum bought me my first calligraphy set - it was one of those dodgy ones from the book club magazines you’d get in primary school. As I advanced through my life, however, it became more “practical” to work in a profession where I would almost be guaranteed a job and a steady income.

After some significant life events involving my mental health, I had to reassess what was important in my life, and what I actually liked doing. I had been learning hand lettering - mostly calligraphy and brush lettering - and I really enjoyed it. I decided to commit myself to study and completed Shillington College part time in 2018, and loved every minute.

Having learned the hard way through my high-pressured legal career, I’m all about balance. I see the value in traditions such as family time and relaxation. I don’t drink coffee, so I often wonder how I got through many years of education without completely losing my mind (well, I did for a while!).

I’ve perhaps always been slightly uncool, classic but also a bit crass. I have some interesting hobbies, which not so long ago were considered extremely daggy - like knitting, crochet, cross-stitch and embroidery. My dream design project would be to hand letter or hand embroider a book cover, or to be involved in typography and branding for a big name business.

I love different, fun and quirky design. Design can make or break a business. It sets you apart from your competitors. It communicates who you are and what you do to the world. That’s why design is important to me and why I love working with my clients.
